Sloped Lots and Multi Level Decks
A lot of backyards in Leander fall away from the house. A single deck on tall posts can work, but it often feels like a balcony.
A multi level deck steps down the hill instead. Each level sits closer to the ground, the stairs are shorter, and the yard feels joined to the house. The city packet lists multi level decks as needing a permit, so we plan for it from the first visit.

We can build the cover with a new deck or add one to the deck you have. First we check that the frame can carry it. Leander's packet says a wood deck that is being covered needs a permit, and so does an arbor.

We fence off the root zone before work starts and place footings between the big roots. We also skip any cuts to oaks from February 1 through June 30, the window the Texas Oak Wilt Partnership says to avoid.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Leander?
Inside city limits, yes. The City of Leander says a permit is needed before any building work starts. Its deck and patio packet names new wood decks, additions to a deck, multi level decks, decks being covered and arbors. Can you build a deck on a steep or rocky lot?
Yes. That is a big part of the work here. We either raise the deck on braced posts or step it down the slope in two or three levels. The yard decides which one fits.
Can my deck get a roof or a pergola later?
Often, yes. A deck is built to hold people, not always a roof. We check the posts, beams and footings first, and add new posts with their own footings when needed. Leander's packet says a deck that is being covered needs a permit.
Will building a deck hurt my oak trees?
It does not have to. We fence the root zone, dig footings by hand near big roots and keep the deck frame clear of the trunk. We also avoid cutting or wounding oaks from February 1 through June 30.
