Decks Around Oak Trees in Leander

We plan decks around trees in Leander so the oak stays healthy, with footings set away from big roots and no cuts to the tree in oak wilt season.

Why Trees Need a Plan

A big oak can be the best part of a backyard. It can also be hurt by a deck job without anyone meaning to. The Texas Oak Wilt Partnership counts construction damage as a wound, the same as pruning. Wounds are how oak wilt can get in.

Fence the Root Zone

Before any work starts, we fence off the ground under the tree. That keeps trucks, piles of lumber and foot traffic off the roots. Packed soil is hard on roots, so the fence stays up until the job is done.

Footings Between the Roots

Near the tree, we dig footing holes by hand so we can see roots before we hit them. If a big root sits where a post should go, we move the post and span the frame over it.

When we do use powered equipment to dig 16 inches or deeper, Texas law asks for a notice to the one call center first. We file it before work starts.

Framing Around a Trunk

A deck can wrap around a tree. We frame the opening with room around the trunk, so the tree can grow and sway in the wind without rubbing the boards. Nothing gets nailed or bolted to the tree.

Timing Oak Work

The Texas Oak Wilt Partnership says to avoid pruning or wounding oaks from February 1 through June 30. If a limb has to come off for the deck, we plan that cut outside that window.

Questions We Hear

When is it safe to trim oaks near my deck?

The Texas Oak Wilt Partnership says to avoid pruning or wounding oaks from February 1 through June 30. Outside that window is the time for any cuts.

Can a deck go right up to a tree?

It can wrap around it. We leave room around the trunk for growth and movement and never fasten anything to the tree.

Will digging footings hurt the roots?

It can if done carelessly. We hand dig near the tree and move posts away from big roots, spanning the frame over them.
